Runs June 10 – 13, Rehearsals begin June 1 (one week) Director/Choreographer: STEPHEN NACHAMIE Musical Director: RAY RHOADS
“The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop pop musical. It takes the audience to the 1958 Springfield High School prop where we meet the Wonderettes – four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match. We learn about their lives and loves, accompanied by the girls performing classic ‘50s and ‘60s pop songs. The second act takes place 10 years later. NOTE: The actors never leave the stage; they sing 33 songs in four-part harmony (while dancing) during the two-hour show. Incredible musical and physical stamina is required!
Cindy Lou - (late 20’s-early 30’s) she knows she is the prettiest girl at Springfield High. She knows she will be named Prom Queen and acts out against her best friend Betty Jean when things don’t go her way. She makes the biggest change between Act 1 & 2, having learned the lessons of true love and loss. MEZZO SOPRANO BELT– sings lead line on most songs. Among the songs she sings are: ‘Allegheny Moon’, ‘Son of a Preacher Man’, ‘Maybe’.
Missy - (late 20’s-early 30’s) She is the over-achiever of the group. Very controlled. Officer in most of the school’s clubs, in charge of the prom decorations and the organizer of the reunion. Her best friend is Suzy. SOPRANO – WIDE RANGE, FLOATS VERY HIGH VOCALS AND BELTS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. Among the songs she sings are: ‘Secret Love’, ‘You Don’t Own Me’, ‘Wedding Bell Blues’.
Betty Jean - (late 20’s-early 30’s) the slightly put-upon class clown, always vying for attention with Cindy Lou, her best friend. A tomboy, she loves Johnny, her high school crush with all her soul, but Cindy Lou steals him away. She holds this grudge against Cindy Lou until they make up at the 10 year reunion. ALTO WITH A STRONG LOW RANGE. Among the songs she sings are: ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’, ‘I Only Want To Be With You’, ‘It’s My Party’.
Suzy - (late 20’s-early 30’s) Best friends with Missy, she is the happy-go-lucky one of the group. Always smiling and giggling, nothing ever seems to bother her. Completely surprised when named prom queen. Angry, crying, and confused in Act 2. MEZZO ALTO, BOTH SIMPLE AND SOUL VOICE. Among the songs she sings are: ‘Stupid Cupid’, ‘Hold Me, Thrill Me’, ‘Rescue Me’. _____________________________________________________

MR. HOBBS’ VACATION Adapted for the stage by F. Andrew Leslie, From the novel by Edward Streeter Runs July 15-18, Rehearsals begin July 6 (one week) Director: Dave Olmsted
From the moment their vacation plans are first discussed, Mr. Hobbs evinces misgivings about trekking off to an unfamiliar island off the New England coast, but the combined enthusiasm of wife Peggy and daughter Kate soon overwhelm his feeble position. Away they go to Rock Harbor, but they no sooner reach their destination, road weary and crumpled, than Mr. Hobbs’ dire predictions come true. Their house is an uncomfortable horror with plumbing that is a nightmare. The hope of having a good rest is annihilated when daughter Jane and son-in-law Byron appear on the scene and then not-so-old friends the Turners appear as well. Before long the Hobbs family is ready and willing to head home – if only to rest up from their “vacation!”
Note – “Locals” in the play should have a convincing New England accent. The play could be set in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The James Stewart film, “Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation,” is very similar as to most characters and locale, but is certainly not a direct adaptation of the play.
MALES:
Elwell Terrey / Martin Turner – actor doubles in these roles, 40-55. Terrey is local, proprietor of Terrey’s General Store, laid back New Englander, takes what comes with equanimity. Turner is a typical American tourist with “sporty” resort clothes and rimless glasses, Emily Turner’s husband, a bit paunchy and thinning on top.
Clyde Peabody / Harry Binger – actor doubles in these roles, 40+. Peabody is local, Rock Harbor’s Chief of Police, small town friendly official. Binger is a bit overbearing and boisterous boater tourist.
Alvin Follensby / Salty Clayberry – actor doubles in these roles, 50-60. Follensby is local, the proprietor of Follensby’s Fish Market, a bit curmudgeonly but sociable. Clayberry is the outgoing friendly skipper of the Bingers’ tourist boat tourist boat.
Roger Hobbs – distinguished looking man, early 50s or so, whose attempts to maintain a sunny disposition is often harried by his family in particular and the world in general. The practical businessman, not as handy as he thinks he is around plumbing and machinery. (Played by James Stewart in the film version of this play.) Seeking AEA Submissions.
Fred Saltonstall – Local plumber who comes to the rescue, 40+, he’s been doing this a long time, knows everyone and their plumbing problems. First appears covered head to foot in daubs of gleaming black grease, fresh from a septic tank job. Excellent comic character actor needed.
Byron Dangerfield – Tall, gangly, intellectual type of about 28 or so with horn-rimmed glasses and an absent-minded air. An egghead. Mr. & Mrs. Hobbs’ son-in-law. He and Jane are slightly bohemian in a cultured, academic way. It is quickly evident that Mr. Hobbs and Byron are not always in harmonious agreement, particularly in the areas of government and economics.
Sam Griswold – Sam is an overgrown college football player, a halfback for Princeton, doesn’t know his own strength. On vacation at Rock Harbor as well, parties with Kate. Early 20s.
Sidney Bollivar – a local Barber in town, 50+, knows a little bit about everything and everyone in town.
Kenneth Wainwright – late 40s-early 50s, Mrs. Gabrielson’s escort, immaculately groomed, quite handsome and very urbane and sophisticated.
FEMALES:
Peggy Hobbs – attractive, energetic woman in her late, but still youthful 40s. (Played in the film version by Maureen O’Hara.) A good wife and mother, the calm center of the family, but with a very long “honey do” list for her husband, Roger Hobbs. Seeking AEA Submissions.
Kate Hobbs – College sophomore, 18-19, has inherited her mother’s good looks and lively disposition.
Mrs. Archer Gabrielson – Attractive woman, late 40’s-early 50s, the voluble social leader of the wealthy set at Rock Harbor and a former schoolmate of Mrs. Hobbs. Class conscious.
Jane Dangerfield – Early 20s, very pretty and quite pregnant. Mr. & Mrs. Hobbs’ daughter, wife of Byron.
Emily Turner – Late 40s-early 50s, on the plump side and wears rather unbecoming and somewhat garish resort clothing, typical American tourist. Wife of Martin Turner. Lacks the vivacity and sense of style of Mrs. Hobbs.
NOTE: The Bingers and the Clayberrys characters have anchored in Rock Harbor and dropped in on the Hobbs’ vacation house for supplies – loud and full of “fun” and perhaps full of liquor as well ---
Joan Binger - 40s, fun-loving tourist, wife of Harry Binger.
Mary Clayberry - 50s, goes by nickname of “Skipper” on her husband Salty Clayberry’s tourist boat. ________________________________________________

We are unable to schedule “special” auditions outside those times listed due to the availability of our musical director and directors. It is incredibly rare for us to cast without an ‘in person’ audition, but if you are completely unable to attend any of our auditions you may submit a dvd of two contrasting songs (uptempo and ballad) of NO MORE than 32 bars each and a one-minute monologue appropriate to the role(s) sought.
Please have your resume attached to the back side of your photograph, and be sure your full contact information is on your resume including where you live (we need to know for housing purposes if you are local, have the possibility of local housing, or are an out of town artist whether we audition you in New York or locally). Note your correct height and weight as well as your vocal type on your resume. Have your music ready for the accompanist in your key and with the start and end places clearly marked. We may or may not have you sing your second piece, so sing what you consider your very best first.
We prefer to cast actors across the season if possible, so be sure to let us know your availability from June 1st through July 31st. Housing and round-trip transportation or reimbursement is provided to out of town actors. ALL of the above information is available as a printable 10-page PDF document HERE. |
